On 22nd of October 2008, at the within the Constantin Brâncuşi University from Tg. Jiu, a debate on personal data processing by video surveillance systems was organised, debate coordinated by Mrs. Georgeta Basarabescu, the president of the National Supervisory Authority For Personal Data Processing and Mr. Moise Bojinca univ. teacher, dean of the  Faculty of Legal Science.

During the presentation of Mrs. Georgeta Basarbescu, it was emphasized the fact that most surveillance authorities from European Union Member States agreed that video surveillance is required for safety reasons, but using it excessively leads to a monitored society with negative effects on the person's human rights.

In Romania, the image and sound capturing operation is monitored and controlled by the National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Processing.

Taking into account this opportunity, it was mentioned that personal data processing can be carried out only by controllers with the purpose of preventing terrorism, real estate insurance, for the national defence equipment, preventing the safety of persons and goods.

Controllers are obliged to notify the National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Processing before starting a personal data processing by using video cameras and to clearly inform about the existence of the surveillance system through a standard sign.
