European Data Protection Day

The European Data Protection Day is celebrated by all the Member States of the European Council on the 28th of January 2010.

With this occasion, we celebrate 29 years since the Convention 108 for the protection of individuals with regard to automatic processing of personal data was adopted.

The national independent authorities for the protection of personal data have a key role in ensuring the compliance with the personal data protection and human rights principles.

The National Supervisory Authority for Personal Data Processing underlines the importance of knowing and exercising the rights granted to each person by the provisions of Law no. 677/2001 on the protection of individuals with regard to the processing of personal data and the free movement of such data.

The data controllers from the public or private sector have the obligation to respect the rules for the protection of personal data, in particular:

  • the obligation to inform the natural persons concerning the personal data collected and used;
  • the obligation to observe the right of access, intervention and to object of each natural person towards the processing of his/her personal data;
  • the obligation to ensure the confidentiality and the security of the personal data used;
  • the obligation to notify the national supervisory authority.

With the occasion of the European Data Protection Day, the national supervisory authority starts the national campaign for the public information, under the motto "Beware of your personal data", campaign which will include posting a thematic notice in the public transportation means of RATB (Bucharest Municipal Public Transportation).
